I have one of these devices that I have had for a very long time (with
one battery replacement). Now the left edge of the screen is losing
pixels - always in the same place. Can I assume this means a screen
fault with no point in replacing batteries or could flat batteries
cause the screen to fail in this way?

Might be a connection fault - probably a flexie that goes from the
screen to the PCB - sometimes these are just stuck onto the board with
conductive adhesive. Warming the strip with a hairdrier, and pushing it
back on the board may be enough to fix it.

Tear down here:

Failing that, it is easy to get another - and since all the banks tend
to use the same verification algorithms, the devices are
interchangeable. So one for a another account / bank will work.

Also you can use the Barclays app on a phone / tablet, and that can
function as a pin sentry as well.

Nothing unexpected, really. I wonder what he thought he'd find.

Is this the spudger he was using?

Probably - I have some, and they are only of limited use. Not thin and
flexible enough to get into narrow gaps and quite likely to damage plastic.

A combination of:

and a box of plectrums of various thicknesses works best IME...

Never change the batteries! Just get Barclays to send you a new device.

Also, as John has stated - use another bank's device. I currently use a
Nationwide device for Barclays transactions.

Its not barned new contrast wise, but its good for at leasts another 20
years..

I was brought up to believe that you should never give offence if you
can avoid it; the new culture tells us you should always take offence if
you can. There are now experts in the art of taking offence, indeed
whole academic subjects, such as 'gender studies', devoted to it.
