Discussion:
What theses symbols mean on microwave

Looks like the micro wave has packed in (not heating) Lost the
instruction manual and these symbols appear in red so presumably some
sort of warnings. Anyone got any ideas what they mean in case I can sort
it before I bin it. Its an asda cheapy about 4 years old.

I don't think they're warnings.

I'd take the squiggly lines to mean a built in grill.

The "1S" and "2S" normally mean "one stage" and "two stage" cooking.

Not sure about the "bowl" icons the onw with solid steam might be
constant heating, the (non illuminated) one with dotted steam might be
intermittent heating?

Dunno, could just be 30 seconds, it would help if the O/P told us the
make/model

The 30 is the timer, I had to use that to switch it on to show the red
symbols.
The model is:
asda Model P80D20EP-Y6A

Thats all the infor from the label on the back of it.

Searching for just the main part of the model, shows it's sold by
Russell Hobbs and Akai, as well as ASDA, but I couldn't find any free
manuals for it online.

Thanks for looking Andy. I have failed to find anything online as well
even more so with asda, it was like a game of ping pong going from dept
to dept then the said they would send a manual (eventually) and the
email had no manual but a statement saying they had resolved the issue!
emailed their COE now see if that will get a response.

had similarly fruitless experience with an asda nuke. A 'cook this long at this power' UI that needs instructions is a bad one.

There is an online manual for the Akai P80D20EP, but visually it looks
quite a different model.

I too have searched. It appears to be the Amica MW13162 Si, made in
Poland in 2010, but no longer on the Amica website, and no manuals
anywhere. I see that Asda doesn't offer online manuals.

This might show the intent of the symbol with the cooking pot and could
give a clue to the intention of the logic:

Looks like it might be on grill or oven setting. Otherwise the only applicable warning is re the HV capacitor that occasionally stores thousands of volts, enough to cremate the unwary.

Microwave ovens tend not to have diagnostics, but I suppose yours
could be an exception.

It looks to me as if the processor chip has crashed. I take it that
you have power cycled it at the mains plug.

Does that :30 seconds appear when you plug it in?

The 30 seconds is the countdown timer for cooking that will vary
depending on what I set it at., I set that so the red lights would come
on. Yes switched it off at the main for 20 minutes and back on.

Check that none of the tac switches are stuck. In other words press
each button and make sure it "feels right"

Pretty cryptic symbols, not very meaningful at all.

Amazing how cheap the cheapest microwaves are now tho.

My conventional oven has similar symbols on its timer. You haven'y by any
chance got part way through programming an "end time" and it is awaiting a
duration to be programmed in?

Are you sure the red symbols aren't a red herring?

What I am suggesting is if the oven was operating normally, those red
symbols are displayed, it's just that you wouldn't have taken much
notice of them until the fault developed.

I realise that the food is not heated but:
Does the turntable rotate?
and
Does the oven make its normal humming sound?

Yes it appears to work as normal except it doesnt heat and normally
those red symbols would`nt appear.

It doesnt have a conventional heating element just `normal` microwave.
The symbols could be a red herring but I want at least to try something
before I bin it just in case I have hit a wrong button. As a comparison
I screw up the tv if I attempt to watch it which maybe once a year, I
havent a clue with flippin electronic controls. I just want on/off switches.

Most likely to be the magnatron fuse has blown, due to the high voltage it
has to be large, and it's a very low value... few hundered milliamps, so a
very thin fuse wire,

They break from fatigue quite often, usually easily enough to tell, if the
glass of the fust is still clear and you can see the wire but with one end
no longer atatched, that's whats happened, where as if the glass is black,
then a fault blew the fuse,

ebay sell the magnatron fuses for a few quid, or you could call an engineer
out to replace it for about 50 quid.

Actually most microwave ovens don't bother with a HV fuse.
The transformer normally runs close to saturation, so a short circuit
magnetron, HV diode or capacitor dosn't make a great deal of
difference to the current drawn.

I suggested earlier in the thread (which my newsreader has lost) that
the displayed icons might be the same under normal operation, and may
be a red herring, and there is a fault in the HV generator.
